United Airlines left me stranded for 18 hours with zero resolution. Here's what happened.

I flew Reno to Orlando for a conference I was contracted to MC. The trip took 24 hours instead of the scheduled time, and I missed Day One entirely.
The timeline:
● My flight was delayed, then canceled. I spent 18 hours stranded at the airport overnight.
● Dozens of passengers searched for help. Multiple gates sat unstaffed for hours.
● United replaced staff with QR codes and remote systems. Those systems failed under real demand.
● A phone rep eventually confirmed the cancellation. No human on site offered guidance.
● United issued a meal voucher. It produced a web error and stopped working within hours.
● I paid out of pocket for food after a night with no assistance.
● United offered hotel accommodation. It was a $12.90 discount voucher. I stayed in the terminal instead.
● Staff told me my luggage would take four to six hours to retrieve. It had already been sent to Orlando to arrive by 5 AM, without my knowledge.
● I was left without my belongings and without accurate updates on their location.
I missed Day One of a conference I was contracted to MC because of this chain of failures.
I filed a formal grievance. United's response cited unscheduled aircraft substitution, a vague explanation that points to overbooking or poor equipment planning, with the cost shifted onto passengers. I received an auto-generated gift certificate that ignored the actual disruption.
I submitted a detailed rebuttal. United closed the case as satisfactory and sent a customer survey without addressing a single point I raised.
This is a pattern worth naming. Airlines charge extra for basic needs like carry-on luggage, then strip human support the moment operations break down. Standard luggage and basic assistance should be baseline, not a profit lever an airline drops when its systems fail.
Automated customer service without human oversight causes real harm to travelers. I'm sharing this because United's own team closed my case with no resolution, and this is the only channel left.
Would you like to see what I did with all of that extra time...?
Here's what I captured within that 18 hour timeline.
